Welcome to Madeira Sportfishing.
Join us on our 1250 Rodman sportfisher, "Atlantic Explorer" here in Madeira. We run out of Funchal marina and look forward to taking you fishing just a short ride away from the coast for to fish for Marlin, Tuna, Mahi Mahi and Wahoo.
Fishing in Madeira doesn't involve early starts and long runs to the fishing grounds. Our fish can be found just 10 minutes out of Funchal marina where the boat is docked.
Madeira island is ideally situated in the eastern mid Atlantic, catching the warm waters of the Gulf stream as is crosses the ocean, to start planning your dream fishing holiday. With water temperatures averaging 17 degrees in the winter and 24 degrees in the summer, fishing in Madeira is year round activity.
Right from the start of the year, Tunas visit our waters, often in vast numbers. In our 2011 season, during the first week on January, 2 of our anglers fishing for 3 days caught 17 Skipjack, 1 Albacore and 1 big eye Tuna. Not bad going for what many call the "off season"! March that year produced some incredible numbers of Albacore Tuna with our catch reports reading something like this, "3 for 4 Albacore, 17 for 23 Albacore, 17 Albacore and a Skipjack, 38 Albacore and a 15kg Dorado". While the fishing is not always up to red letter day standards you can be rest assured that we will always do our best to try and find the fish.
During the month of April the Big Eye Tunas start to show in numbers. Traditional known locally as the "Easter Tuna Run", these fish can often exceed 70kg in weight and as spring moves to summer it is not uncommon for fish over 150kg to be caught.
From mid May each year the Atlantic Blue Marlin show up, with an average size of 650lb, its the fish that many to to Madeira to do battle with. Every year fish upto and over 1000lb are caught and released by the local charter fleet.
From mid to late August Wahoo start to show on the grounds and these fish make excellent sport on light tackle. We fish 20lb stand up gear for these speedsters and as well as putting up a great fight they make very good eating. You can be rest assured that a few steaks will be knocked of and enjoyed with a few beers in one of the marina bars at the end of the day!
A typical day's fishing will see the boat leave the marina at 10.00hr and fish for a full day, returning to port at 17.00hr. During the day you will be provided with lunch and complimentary water, soft drinks and beer. All you need to bring is a hat and suncream!
For Blue Marlin fishing we use 4 x Penn International 130lb rod and reel combos, all loaded with pre tested IGFA rated line. Lures are from a selection from Marlin Magic / Gary Eoff, Joe Yee, Legend, Black Bart, Moldcraft to name but a few.
We also carry onboard 2 x Penn International 80lb rod and reel combos, 4 x 50lb combos and 2 x 30lb combos. All ready to go and hook into that fish of your dreams!
